Unique to Illinois, Forest Preserve Districts are designed to protect large natural areas and provide passive recreation.
Your Lake County Forest Preserve District was created in 1958 under Illinois law as a special purpose unit of government. Since then, we have blossomed into a system of vibrant natural areas and have been recognized as a national leader in conservation, while offering fun ways for you to recreate, relax and learn in forest preserves throughout Lake County.
Today we protect nearly 31,000 acres and are the second-largest Forest Preserve District in Illinois.
Board of Commissioners
A 21-member elected Board of Commissioners governs your Lake County Forest Preserves. They guide the agency's mission and approve all land acquisitions, restoration and improvement projects, educational and cultural programs, the annual budget and other administrative actions. These same officials also serve as County Board members, overseeing all other aspects of Lake County government. Each member of our Board serves on one or more standing committees, and may also be appointed by the president to special committees. Ensuring the Public Trust

Our website is a comprehensive source of frequently requested information, including our annual budget, monthly expenditures, audits, administrative data, Board actions, and vendor contracts. We receive most of our funding through property taxes. Fees, other charges, grants, gifts and donations make up the balance. View budget »
